COMMUNITY COMMEMORATIONS

April 11, Sunday, 3:00 pm:  YOM HaSHOAH CANDLE LIGHTING CEREMONY
Mittleman Jewish Community Center (MJCC), 6651 SW Capitol Highway, Portland, Oregon. Sponsored by the Oregon Board of Rabbis and Oregon Holocaust Survivors, Refugees, and Families (OHSRAF). The commemoration ritual will  feature musical pieces by Holocaust survivors, performed by the Portland Jewish Academy (PJA) Choir and the Oregon Jewish Community Orchestra. The ritual will center around a candle-lighting ceremony led by survivors of the Shoah and the rabbis of the Oregon Jewish community. Further Info from MJCC: CLICK HERE.

April 12, Monday, 11:00 am to 4:30 pm:  UNTO EVERY PERSON THERE IS A NAME

The Garaventa Center at the  University of Portland

April 29, Thursday, 7:30pm: Representatives from the Oregon Trail Chapter of the American Red Cross will discuss the organization’s efforts to trace and reunite family members separated due to natural disasters and armed conflicts, including those separated during the Holocaust and World War II.
May 26, Wednesday, 7:30pm: Hidden Holocausts: Jews Who Kept their Secrets — for Life.
Roger Porter, Professor of English at Reed College will talk about history, memory and autobiography.

Yom HaShoah observance, film, and discussion facilitated by Rabbi Jonathan Seidel, Rabbinic Chaplain

Oregon State University: Holocaust Memorial Week 2010
Remember the past ~ Change the future Holocaust Memorial Program. This April will see the 24th annual observance of Holocaust Memorial  Week at Oregon State University. The upcoming program will include  many events, among them a performance of the play A Bright Room Called Day by Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Tony Kushner; lectures on anti-semitism and genocide; and an evening of testimony from Eline Hoekstra Dresden, a survivor of the Westerbork camp in  the Netherlands. SYNAGOGUES

April 10, Saturday, 7:30 pm: Temple Beth Tikvah Yom HaShoah Memorial Service

The movie A Beautiful Life will be screened, followed by a falafel lunch. Middle school age through adults are welcome to attend. A new adaptation of The Diary of Anne Frank will premiere on Oregon Public Broadcasting as part of the Masterpiece Classic series. The presentation will repeat at 2 am on April 13.
