Public presentation: “A Voice of Survival” — featuring Les and Eva Aigner, Holocaust Survivors from the Oregon Holocaust Resource Center

A full-day workshop for educators and other interested persons.
Location: Integrated Services Building, 1607 Gekeler Lane, La Grande
(Please park on the side or back of the building, and enter through the back lobby.)
8:30-9- Registration/ Coffee and tea
9:00-9:15- Welcome and introductions- Dr. Jill Slansky, OHRC
9:15-10:00 Holocaust Lessons for a Broken World- Giving teachers tools needed to teach the complex issues of the Holocaust and its lessons. Dr. Jill Slansky, OHRC
10:-10:30 Question and Answer Session- Eva and Les Aigner, Holocaust Survivors from the OHRC
10:30- Break
10:45-11:45- Guidelines on teaching the Holocaust- Methodological considerations and challenges for creating authentic learning. Using United States Holocaust Memorial Museum guidelines, this session explores the methodology behind effective Holocaust education. Rob Hadley, USHMM
12-12:45: Lunch on your own. Information about local lunch options will be provided. You are also welcome to bring a “brown bag” lunch.
12:45-1:45: Tips from a Teacher- Veteran teacher Carrie McCallum will share about teaching the Holocaust and the experiences she has had working with other teachers around the world. Carrie McCallum, OHRC
1:45-2:00 BREAK
2-4 Teaching with Oral Histories and the 8 Stages of Genocide- This session will explore the importance of using oral histories and how to do so effectively in the classroom. Participants will also explore the theory of the “8 Stages of Genocide” allowing for connections to made between the Holocaust and more contemporary genocides. Rob Hadley, USHMM
Pre-registration is required for the Friday workshop. Space is limited. On-site registration will be on a “space available” basis. To register for the Friday workshop, please complete and return the registration form found on the link below.
EOU credit will be available for individuals attending both the Thursday evening and all-day Friday events. Oregon CPD credit is available if attending only the Friday workshop.
